In the historical center of EMPORIO, there is the best preserved castle of the island. It was built around 1450 and was the most "commercial" of the castles, as the market of the island operated here, with the largest traffic of products. Walking through Kastelli, in the narrow streets with the houses stuck to each other, the small doors and even smaller windows, painted in soft earthy colors. The castle and almost all the houses are inhabited.

The first act of the play The Flies (a transfer of the myth of the Oresteia from the point of view of existentialism) is inspired by Emporio, "the village with the gloomy atmosphere of all those empty, boarded-up houses bathed in the blinding light of midday". -Simon de Beauvoir
